Your Plastic Surgeon Should be Highly Educated, Trained and Skilled

TRAINING… QUALITY EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE – for 2017 and Beyond!

You should choose a surgeon who really is well educated, fellowship trained and with hands on experience. Patients are already scheduling for 2017 procedures…so I want to remind you of the importance of your surgeon’s credentials.  I share mine with you as an example…

PRIMARY GOAL – HIGHEST QUALITY CARE

Providing the highest quality care to my patients has always been my primary goal… so I adhered to the highest standards …beginning with my studies. My degree in Dentistry includes the Dell Medal for Performance and The British Student of the Year award from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland.  After earning my medical degree from the University of Maryland, my peers voted for me to receive the Babcock Award for surgical excellence. Moving on to specialize in head and neck/otolaryngology at the world renown Mayo Clinic was the next phase in my career. For my final years of hands on experience, I was awarded a plastic surgery fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh – renown for its comprehensive plastic surgery programs – and then I completed a reconstructive cancer fellowship at the premier cancer hospital in the country, MD Anderson in Texas.

QUALIFICATIONS… BOARD CERTIFICATION DOES MATTER!
Another factor that elevates my standing as a plastic surgeon is that I am triple board certified in a rare yet extremely applicable combination: plastic surgery, otolaryngology/head and neck surgery, and facial plastic surgery (which I earned the Jack Webster prize for the highest score).  I am the only such surgeon in the tri-state area and one of only a handful in the United States with this level of triple board certification.

It is important to note that the board certifications I’ve earned are accredited by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS), which has the highest standards. With ABMS certifications you can be assured that the doctor has:
– graduated from an accredited medical school
– completed at least 5 years of additional training as a resident surgeon in a program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Medical Education or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada
– passed comprehensive written and oral exams
– voluntarily submitted to this extra process after their training to demonstrate a commitment to excellence in their field

RESULTS… PAY ATTENTION TO PEER AND PATIENT REVIEW
I believe in always staying on the cutting edge of my field. As a result I have given 95 national and international lectures, and written more than 100 clinical papers. Some of my greatest acknowledgements have been from my peers and patients, as I’ve been:
– nominated in the Washingtonian for both “Best Doctor” in plastic surgery AND breast reconstruction (by my peers)
– currently rated Castle Connolly best surgeon and an “America’s Top Surgeon”
– selected as “The Best Plastic Surgeon” of DC and “Number One Doctor” (for many years by patients)

My biggest reward and compliment is a satisfied patient. To find out more of my credentials and schedule a consultation, please visit www.davinciplastic.com.

Refresh Your Under Eyes with Fillers

When you look at yourself in the mirror do you see dark circles, deep hollows, and tired looking eyes? If the hustle and bustle of the holidays is putting extra stress on you and it’s showing, you can turn to one of the most under estimated areas of the face – to restore some youthfulness to your tear troughs.

What are tear troughs?
The tear trough is the area under the eye that extends from the inner corner of the eye, arching down in a semicircle. The technical term is the nasojugal groove. Sunken tear troughs can cast a shadow under the eye that looks like dark circles and gives the face a worn out appearance. This sunkenness also ages the face by creating a visible separation from what should be the smooth transition – from the lower eyelid to the cheek.

Why do tear troughs happen?
The skin under the eyes is very thin and delicate. It shows signs of distress more easily than thicker skin. It is also more prone to the aging effects of gravity. The tissue laxity and volume loss under the eyes, as we age, leads to the tear trough becoming more prominent. Also, as fat gets displaced from behind the eye, or possibly increases and bulges under the eye, this can accentuate the aging of the eye area.

How can the under eye be rejuvenated?
Try …
– getting more rest
– cutting down on salty foods
– minimizing your exposure to environmental pollutants
– not rubbing your eyes so much

While these tips can prevent the tear troughs and under eye bags from getting worse, you can also reverse their appearance with hyaluronic acid fillers.

Rejuvenate Your Tear Troughs with HA Fillers
While there are surgical options to reversing tear troughs, more people prefer to try non invasive treatments first. This has led to the use of hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers, such as Restylane, Juvéderm or Belotero. When they are injected on top of the orbital bone, the HA attracts water to the area to restore volume. This gives the eyes a fresh, rested appearance by the next day after treatment. These results will last 6 months to a year, and you can go right back to your daily routine with no downtime or recovery.

Subtle Solutions for Significant Youthfulness
Today’s patients realize that facial rejuvenation can happen from restoring volume loss in subtle areas … such as the earlobes, temples, chin, melolabial folds and tear troughs. I definitely see a more rested, fresh, and youthful appearance for the whole face using HA fillers to rejuvenate the under eyes.

There’s still time to make your eyes look alive and bright again….before the Holidays!  Call to schedule your treatment today!

Breast Augmentation General Q’s & A’s

Breast Augmentation General Q & A

Even though Breast Augmentation is the most popular cosmetic surgery procedure, there are a lot of questions women have. This Q & A is an overview of some of them… but my intention here is not to replace the consultation. The consultation is an invaluable part of my process. It is crucial to get to know my patients personally and to get on the same page. I hope this blog helps you along your journey to deciding whether a Breast Augmentation is a good fit for you and I hope to be talking with you further at a consultation, which can be scheduled at www.davinciplastic.com.

What Is A Breast Augmentation?
Breast Augmentation specifically addresses increasing breast size and shape. Other surgical procedures related to the breast are:
Breast Reduction makes large breast smaller and more manageable. Patients with too large of breasts suffer from back pain and other issues, and a reduction can provide great relief.
Breast Lift helps sagging breasts look younger and perky. This is great in combination with an Augmentation or Reduction.
Nipple Reduction specifically addresses only the nipples, which can get stretched out during breastfeeding or may be out of proportion in relation to the overall breast size. A Nipple Reduction can bring the nipple size in balance with the breast for a more aesthetic appearance.

Saline or Silicone?
Saline is a silicone shell filled with sterile saline, or salt water. Silicone is a completely silicone implant. Both are shown to be safe, effective and dramatically improved over the last few years. Within these categories, there are many kinds of implants to consider. This decision is highly up to personal preference and goals. As there are quite a few aspects of this question to address, I will dedicate my next blog just to this topic.

What Does The Surgery Involve?

  1.  Preparation: Consultation and decision on the size and type of implant, location of implant and incision location. You may need to get a blood test, stop smoking, adjust medications and vitamins.
  2. Anesthesia: General anesthesia in our highest quality outpatient center will help you feel completely comfortable during surgery.
  3. Incision: Your body type, breast size, type of implant, and scar preferences will help us to determine the optimal location (under breast line, armpit, belly button, or areola).
  4. Insertion: Many factors will help us decide whether the implant should be inserted into a pocket above or below the pectoral muscle, including the amount of breast tissue already present, drooping, position and size desired.
  5. Closing Incisions: This will involve internal sutures within layers of the breast tissue and on the surface skin closure.
  6. Recovery: Like with any major surgery, there will be a period of discomfort that can be managed by oral pain medication. The first week is low key while wearing a support bra and possibly tending to a drainage tube for a few of those days. After 2 weeks normal activities, except for exercise or strenuous exertion, can resume. We will see you and check on you to make sure you’re doing ok. It’ll take between 4 to 6 weeks to feel somewhat normal. The skin can continue to feel tight and sensitive beyond that, but it shouldn’t impede your everyday life.
  7. Results: Over and over again, my patients have confirmed that the recovery is worth the results. The implants take a few weeks to “settle” into their position and the scars will take some time to fade, but your body satisfaction and restored femininity are long lasting and well worth your investment in yourself!

Fall Season is Facelift Season

The summer season is coming to a close and it is time to prepare for fall… which is an ideal time to squeeze in a cosmetic procedure. Most people enjoy active summer months with vacations, fun outdoor activities and events. For those people, it’s a great time to stay up to date with rejuvenating procedures that don’t involve any downtime, such as Botox or Juvederm. Once the back to school flurry settles, there’s a nice 2 to 3 month window – in the fall -before the holiday festivities kick in. This is an ideal time to do a cosmetic surgery that requires some downtime/recovery… the Facelift.

Facelift in the Fall
As the weather is starting to cool down, the calendar is as well. Taking advantage of this pre holiday season of rest is the perfect occasion for a Facelift.

The Facelift is one of the most time tested and perfected procedures in plastic surgery. It is extremely customizable, yet requires significant technical and artistic skill. This combination can only be achieved by an experienced board certified surgeon, such as myself.

Also, the ease and time frame of the Facelift recovery can be greatly determined by the skill of the surgeon, the quality of the skin and the type of Facelift that is performed. Having your Facelift in the late summer – early Fall phase gives your body a good chance to heal and reveal great results in time for Thanksgiving and the winter festivities.

What a Facelift Can Do for You…
I spend time with my patients – one on one, face to face (the consultation),  to understand their desires and to explain what kind of results to expect. There are many options and techniques to give you the most harmonious, youthful results possible.

On the minimal end of the spectrum is the Mini Facelift. The Mini Facelift offers a subtle rejuvenation to younger patients in their 40s with minor signs of aging and loose skin. Your face will look refreshed and more youthful, but most people won’t be able to pinpoint that you’ve had surgery.

On the end of the Facelift spectrum providing more dramatic results is a Traditional or Full Facelift. A Full Facelift is a comprehensive way to rejuvenate every area of the face from the forehead down to the neck. It provides smoother, tighter, lifted skin that can take 10 years off your appearance.

Facelift Recovery…From weeks to months to over a year, there are different stages of recovery.

Someone may be able to go back to work with makeup on in a matter of a week after a Mini Facelift. On the other hand, the tightness, sensation and swelling of the internal tissue may take more than a year to completely heal after a Full Facelift, even though superficially the face looks great after about 3 months. As mentioned previously, the recovery depends on the:
skill of the surgeon to execute the surgery with gentle, precise technique,
quality of the skin to bounce back and heal,
type of Facelift surgery to determine the amount of tissue, muscle and skin affected.

A younger, refreshed face is waiting for you this Fall. Now is the perfect time to talk about, plan and perform your Facelift. Visit www.davinciplastic.com today.

Men: Minimize Your Gut With SculpSure

Starting in their 30s, men start to lose muscle mass and the metabolism slows down. If they don’t become more physically active or decrease their calorie intake, the muscle tissue will be replaced by body fat, particularly around the abdomen. Fortunately there’s a way to destroy those fat cells. It doesn’t involve surgery or any discomfort… and its call SculpSure.

SculpSure Targets Fat Where Men Need It Most
There are definite gender differences in how fat is typically distributed in the body. Women tend to carry more fat in their lower body, such as in the hips and thighs and this gives their figure more of a pear shape. Men generally carry the extra weight around their abdomen and flanks, which gives their body more of an apple shape.

Studies show that regardless of obesity, men and women contain more fat cells in these particular gender specific body regions. Fortunately for men, SculpSure is the world’s first laser treatment cleared by the FDA to target the fat in their most common trouble areas: the belly and “love handles.”

Eliminate Belly Fat for Looks and Better Health
While you’ll feel an amazing confidence boost after getting rid of the extra weight around your middle, you’ll feel great for other reasons too. Reduction in back pain, more agility and less weight on your joints can contribute to an overall more active lifestyle. Another important reason to trim down the fat round your middle is that recent studies correlate excess belly fat and health related risks, such as type 2 diabetes and coronary heart disease.

Destroy Fat with No Downtime
The typical corporate lifestyle for a man doesn’t leave much time for surgical recovery. This has lead to the rise in non invasive treatments for men who want to look and feel good, but can’t take the time off work. Brotox is just one of the many age reversing treatments for men that has become popular. Like Botox, SculpSure treatments can occur during a work day’s lunch break with no discomfort or downtime. In a 25 minute session, this state of the art, controlled light based technology can melt up to 24% of target fat cells.

Schedule a consultation with us if you or the man in your life wants a flatter, smoother abdomen and less love handles. Visit www.davinciplastic.com today to talk about how SculpSure can help you have that swimsuit ready body this summer.

Your Celebrity Body

Celebrity Body Sculpting or Body Contouring has paved the way for the general population to see, adore and emulate. With increased celebrity presence in the public eye through social media, their influence is much more far reaching. Celebrities have set the “ideal” body types and facial features that are seen as desirable in our culture. So much so, that it isn’t rare to have patients request lips like Angelina Jolie, a nose like Kate Middleton or arms like Michelle Obama.

Social Media Influence on Younger Millennials
With 2015 seeing the celebrity rise of the younger Kardashian sisters, Kylie and Kendall, their peers took notice of their cosmetic enhancements. With the Millennial generation practically living on Instagram and Facebook, when the celebrities they follow, such as the younger Kardashians, have cosmetic procedures, this greatly contributes their desire to get these procedures as well. Also, the aging prevention mindset is much more present with Millennials who are getting injections and other non surgical procedures in their 20s. This is reflected in the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) 2015 survey, in which 64% of their members experienced an increase of procedures performed on this under 30 age group.

Other Generations Aren’t Immune
Boomers, GenXer’s and Millennials in their 30s certainly aren’t exempt from the influence of social media on their perception of an ideal body and face. They see the Body Sculpting procedures that celebrities have received and use this as a springboard to creating a younger looking, contoured version of themselves. Relative to their degree of aging, this would include both the non invasive procedures, injectables, as well as surgeries.

What Does Body Contouring Include?
These are some of the most common aspects of Body Sculpting, which can include one or over time, all, of these procedures:

  • Injectables
  • Facelift
  • Rhinoplasty
  • Eyelid or Forehead Lift
  • Breast Augmentation
  • Arm Lift
  • Tummy Tuck

It’s All About You!

  • This array of Body Sculpting cosmetic procedures can help you get the body you desire when you may not have access to a personal chef, stylist, trainer and unlimited financial resources like the celebrities.
  • I want my patients to be healthy and feel good in their own skin. Finding the right Body Contouring procedures for you can build confidence that can help in all areas of life, including the possibility of a job promotion and finding a love connection.
  • Let’s talk now and design your ideal Body Sculpting Plan so that you can have your best, healthiest body coming into the summer swimsuit season and beyond.

Lipomas – 30 Seconds to Gone!

Using my “quick squeeze” method means my patients lipomas are gone in about 30 seconds.

This is the time of year, with Spring upon us…well here anyway…people are thinking about summer vacations, school events, family reunions, corporate events and more.  For many women, this involves wearing sleeveless and or low cut tops, shorts and swim wear and elegant evening wear…and more relaxes open collar or collarless shirts and shorts for men. These styles, while comfortable and casual are often more revealing and can show off unwelcome defects on the body.

For most people these events are fun and looked forward to.  But, for people with lipomas…not so!

What are Lipomas?  Lipomas come in various shapes and sizes – they are soft tissue tumors that can pop up anywhere on the body.  Even though most are not painful, they can be if they are pressing on a nerve.  For most people they represent an inconvenient, unsightly lump, bump that is not cancerous but you don’t want it on your body!

Get Those Lumps and Bumps Checked Out!

Typical Signs of Lipomas:

  • have a lump that is soft to touch and moveable (as opposed to a hard, stationary cyst)
  • feel no pain or discomfort within the lump (although it can be pressing on a nerve to cause discomfort)
  • are an adult between 40 to 60 years of age (it’s possible for children and young adults to have lipomas, although not as common)
  • feel the mass is very large (lipomas can grow to 6 centimeters in diameter)

Plastic Surgeons are specially trained to deal with Lipomas surgically. I have for years.  But now, with my “quick squeeze removal method” – surgery is avoided more often than not – and leaves little to no scarring.

Typical Treatments for Lipomas:

1) endoscope assisted removal:

2) suction assisted removal,

3) minimal incision removal and

4) remote incision lipoma extraction.

These all work and have been used by surgeons for decades to remove lipomas of all types.  But, some of these techniques are tedious and require extra equipment (even though they are advanced treatments).

I helped pioneer a very simple, safe and effective method that involves a simple incision and a “quick squeeze” to remove lipomas without all the extra instruments used in other methods.

Quick Overview of Quick Squeeze Lipoma Removal:

1) the lipoma is identified by palpation and its margins are outlined.

2) The area is then infiltrated with local anesthesia and is prepared and draped in standard fashion.

3) An incision approximately one quarter to one third the diameter of the lipoma is made (carried down to the lipoma capsule).

4) The lipoma is then squeezed out through the incision…without any additional dissection.

Lipomas and Keloids should be treated only by medical experts, such as myself to avoid excess scarring and unnecessary discomfort.  See my website: www.DavinciPlasticSurgery.com for complete information.  Then come in and lets talk about the treatment best suited to your concerns.

Under Eye Refreshment…with Injectables

When you look at yourself in the mirror do you see dark circles, deep hollows, and tired looking eyes? If your hectic schedule puts extra stress on you and it’s showing, you can refresh one of the most underestimated areas of the face… to restore some youthfulness to your features: the tear troughs.

What are Tear Troughs?
The tear trough is the area under the eye that extends from the inner corner of the eye, arching down in a semicircle. The technical term is the nasojugal groove. When the tear troughs are sunken, they can cast shadows under the eyes that look like dark circles. This gives the face a worn out appearance. This sunkenness also ages the face by creating a visible separation from (this should be the smooth transition) the lower eyelid to the cheek.

What Causes Tear Troughs?
The skin under the eyes is very thin and delicate. It shows signs of distress more easily than thicker skin. It is also more prone to the aging effects of gravity. The tissue laxity and volume loss under the eyes, as we age, leads to the tear trough becoming more prominent. Also, as fat gets displaced from behind the eye, or possibly increases and bulges under the eye, this can accentuate the aging of the eye area.

How can the under eye be rejuvenated?
Try
get more rest
cut down on salty foods
minimize exposure to environmental pollutants

avoid rubbing your eyes so much

Options I offer to rejuvenate the eye area:
Rejuvenate with HA – Hyaluronic Acid Fillers
There are surgical options to reversing tear troughs, but more people prefer to try non invasive treatments first. This has led to the use of hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers, such as Restylane, Juvéderm. When injected on top of the orbital bone, the HA filler attracts water to restore volume. This gives the eyes a fresh, rested appearance – usually the next day after treatment. Results last 6 months to a year, and most people go right back to their daily routine with no downtime or recovery.

Side Effects? Some minor bruising or swelling is common with most injections. This can easily be lessened with an ice pack, and covered by Iredale mineral makeup.

FDA Approved Juvéderm Voluma™ XC for Cheek Rejuvenation

This blog will introduce you to the new age reversing Juvéderm Voluma™ XC the first FDA approved filler to restore youthfulness to your cheek area.  Watch for it at DAVinci in coming months.  I’m confident You will fall in love with it!

It is the first filler developed specifically for the cheek area.  Other fillers have been used for years to rejuvenate this mid face area and restore volume and contour, but Juvederm Voluma XC is the first hyaluronic acid filler approved by the FDA to specifically address this area.

Normal age related changes cause loss of volume in the mid face. This volume loss causes the cheeks to flatten out and the skin to droop and sag.  Juverdern Voluma XC is the thickest hyaluronic acid available.  The gel flows smoothly, easily and more consistently.  It is formulated with a small amount of lidocaine to numb the injection site and ensure absolute comfort during injection with immediate results.

Hyaluronic Acid works by attracting water to itself.  This water then binds to the molecules of the filler thus creating volume that plumps up lines, wrinkles and hollows of the face.  When injected into the cheek area it gently lifts the skin, eliminating the hollow cheeks and removing years of aging from the face.

Immediate Results    During clinical trials, patients saw instant correction of age related volume loss in the cheek area.  The results were a more overall youthful appearance.

DAVinci…offers the best, most advanced anti aging treatments available today.  Juvederm Voluma XC is a preview of things to come at DAVinci, in the near future, as we continue to offer our patients the best, safest and most effective treatment options available.

EXPERT INJECTORs!  An expert injector has special training/certification in all dermal fillers, their uses and the  most effective injection methods.  Dentists, Spa personnel, walk in clinic medical doctors and many others who offer the latest, greatest injectable treatments… are not all qualified to perform these anti aging injections to the complex facial anatomy.  An expert injector is a Board certified plastic/reconstructive surgeon specialized in all facial procedures and who also train their medical staff to perform delicate injectable procedures. As Expert Injectors, they have additional specialized training and are certified as “Expert Injectors.” Nora and I are specially trained and certified Expert Injectors.  Know before you go!

THANKSGIVING  and GRATITUDE

Thanksgiving is this month and is recognized as the “time for giving thanks. The benefits of gratitude cannot be overstated.  Harvard researchers announced in 2011 that “giving thanks can make you happier.” I’m confident we all know that but reminders are good. Gratitude was often the forgotten factor in happiness research but is now a topic of serious focus.  Here are a few ways expressing gratitude affects us:

  • Expressing gratitude can lift the spirits
  • Gratitude is a thankful appreciation for what an individual receives- tangible or intangible
  • Showing gratitude means acknowledging the goodness in our lives
  • Helps us realize that the source of goodness lies outside ourselves (at least partially)
  • Helps us feel more positive emotions, relish good experiences, see improved health, deal better with adversity, build strong relationships

More on Gratitude next blog!   In the meantime, let’s all make a conscious effort to be grateful and to show it.

PRIMER ON INJECTABLES

shutterstock_91754579A SERIOUS LEVEL OF SKILL IS REQUIRED TO PERFORM INJECTABLE TREATMENTS and to GET BEAUTIFUL, DESIRABLE RESULTS. These are experts and are qualified to give injectable treatments:  Board Certified Plastic Surgeons; Facial Plastic Surgeons, Dermatologists or Oculoplastic Surgeons, specially trained RN’s, CRN’s or PA’s who work directly under a surgeons supervision.  The KEY WORDs to look for in their advertising is:  Specially Trained Expert Injector.   These people have specialized training, are certified in injectables of every kind and have a vast knowledge base of their best uses, the risks involved, their history and much more.

PEOPLE NOT QUALIFIED TO PERFORM INJECTABLE TREATMENTS: include aestheticians, hair stylists, cosmetologists, dentists or medical professionals who have not been specifically trained to use today’s injectables. They are not Expert Injectors.

TRUST YOUR DOCTOR’S OFFICE:  The only place you should get injectable treatments performed is in your doctor’s/surgeon’s office or Medi-Spa within that office under the physician’s direct supervision.  DO NOT GET INJECTABLES AT YOUR LOCAL SPA or SALON!  They are not qualified nor medically equipped for routine injections or for emergencies in cases of injury or health complications.  They are not required to follow medically defined sterility and health standards and they are not supervised by an on site doctor who is responsible, trained and experienced.  HTTP://www.davinciplastic.com.

INJECTABLES DO PREVENT LINES and WRINKLES and LIFT SAGGING SKIN…Today’s injectables are truly amazing and they do achieve results either instantly or gradually and subtly.

BOTOX®  is the well known “denerving agent” used to smooth out existing lines and to prevent future ones.  FDA approved in 2002, Botox works by relaxing/paralyzing the muscles in motion that create smile lines, forehead lines, parentheses between the eyes and Botox, (Botulinum Toxin Type A) has been used therapeutically since the early 1950’s for treating spasms, uncontrollable blinking and  much more and today successfully treats chronic Migraine Headaches, excessive sweating etc. and is a leader in cosmetic anti aging treatments.

HYALURONIC ACIDS:  HA is a naturally occurring body substance that declines with aging.  Similar to a sponge, HA attracts and binds to water to keep the skin hydrated and well contoured.  Hyaluronic acid fills in the spaces between collagen and elastin fibers.  Replacing it with injectable treatments means putting back into your body a substance natural to and recognized by the body…it’s accepted, works well and restores youthfulness!  Juvederm, Perlane and Restylane are top choices to replace depleted Hyaluronic Acid.

COLLAGEN BOOSTERS:  These provide long lasting results while stimulating your own collagen production.  Sculptra offers results often lasting up to 24 months and is excellent for filling in hollow cheeks, under eye hollows, nasolabial folds, thin lips and is used in combination with Restylane e.g. to create smoothness around the eye and tear troughs. RADIESSE also is very popular as a collagen booster and provides long lasting results while your own collagen is renewed.

FAT GRAFTING/FAT INJECTIONS using your own body…when injected into targeted areas, plumps up, restores contour, fills in hollows and rejuvenates an aging face, hollow hands and more.  It’s natural, with no risk of rejection or reaction.  Results are subtle and continue over time.

BOTTOM LINE ON INJECTABLES:  We help you decide your best choices to achieve more volume, lifting, to banish lines and wrinkles and to restore a more youthful look!

READY TO GET STARTED…WE CAN HELP YOU PUT YOUR BEST SELF FORWARD!

BEST TO YOU AND YOURS,

Steven Davison, M.D.

IMPLANT BREAST RECONSTRUCTION (Restoration)

In review, I’ve quickly covered Stages I & II of Breast Restoration surgery. Now, let’s look at breast reconstruction using implants instead of your own body tissue.  Implants are chosen by hundreds of thousands of women every year to restore a natural looking figure with two breasts.  Some women choose to start this process immediately (Immediate Restoration) by having the surgeon place the tissue expanders at the time of the mastectomy…under the same anesthesia and using the same incision. Remember, the expanders are the precursor to the permanent implants. They slowly and gently expand the chest tissue to allow for the implants at a later date. Read more about this: https://www.davinciplastic.com/

BREAST IMPLANT SURGERY… When it’s time to place the saline or silicone implants…usually 3-4 months (I help you decide which is best for you), the surgery is scheduled to do the implant(s) placement.  This involves going through the same incision used to place the expanders, removing the expanders and precisely placing the correct implants. General anesthesia is used for this procedure. The incisions are closed and healing begins taking place.  Stage II is now complete. Healing for all surgeries takes times and varies with each individual.  Activities are restricted at first, but you gradually move back into full activities…looking and feeling great.

ABOUT IMPLANTS…Today’s implants are the most advanced and safest of all time.  You can choose from either saline or silicone filled implants (both are FDA approved) and both types come in a spectrum of sizes and shapes, and have either smooth or textured surfaces to meet the many individual needs of women today. Implants are not for everyone, but for those who choose them…they restore natural looking, contoured breasts, enhanced self confidence and return to a normal lifestyle.

ABOUT BOARD CERTIFICATION… I am a board certified reconstructive surgeon with specialization in breast reconstruction.  Board certification does not guarantee certain results, but it does ensure that you are working with a surgeon who has been trained by the experts, has had years of extra education and experience and vast knowledge to draw from.  I am ranked among the “Top Docs” in the Nation who perform reconstructive surgeries successfully everyday…not bragging…but you need to know some docs are highly skilled and trained…others are not.

Next time I’ll discuss Stage III breast Reconstruction…known as Beautification. Be sure to read the previous blogs if you missed them.

Stay Well,

Dr. Steven Davison
