Deciding to move forward with breast augmentation surgery is exciting, but what is often much less exciting is budgeting. As with anything, the actual cost of your breast augmentation may not be as straightforward as the price you’ve seen when researching online. What you probably don’t realize is that the advertised price for cosmetic surgery often reflects only part of your total investment. From consultations to recovery and long-term care of your breast implants, there are several additional expenses that can influence the final cost of your procedure. In this blog, we’ll go over some of these details so you can budget for your breast augmentation with confidence and avoid financial surprises.

How Much Is Breast Augmentation?

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), the average cost of breast augmentation is $4,875. The cost of breast implants in Georgetown and Washington, D.C. typically starts at around $6,500. However, keep in mind that those numbers do not include line items such as anesthesia fees, surgical facility fees, and other related expenses. Additionally, your surgeon’s experience and reputation, and your geographical location can also raise the cost of your procedure. Below, we explore some of the factors that could influence the final price tag of your breast augmentation surgery

Breast Augmentation Consultation Fees

Every breast augmentation journey begins with a consultation. This initial visit allows your plastic surgeon to assess your anatomy, discuss your implant options, and learn about your goals for your results. When scheduling your appointment, be sure to ask whether the consultation is complimentary or if there is a fee. In some cases, if they do charge a consultation fee, it may be credited toward your surgery if you decide to move forward with them; however, that’s not guaranteed.

Surgical Costs Beyond the Surgeon’s Fee

When reviewing breast augmentation pricing, it’s easy to assume everything is included. In reality, many quotes only cover the surgeon’s fee. Other essential components of surgery are typically billed separately.

General anesthesia is required for breast augmentation, and anesthesia fees vary based on the length of the procedure and the credentials of your anesthesia provider. Facility fees are another major factor. Surgery performed in a hospital can differ significantly in cost from a procedure performed in a private surgical center or an accredited in-office operating suite. Always confirm whether anesthesia and facility fees are bundled into your quote or listed separately so you can accurately estimate your final total.

Recovery-Related Expenses

After surgery, recovery brings its own set of costs. You will likely be prescribed medications such as pain relievers, antibiotics, or anti-nausea drugs. Depending on your insurance coverage, these prescriptions may be partially covered or entirely out-of-pocket.

You’ll also need post-surgical garments, such as a compression bra or surgical bra, to support your healing breasts and help minimize swelling. Some surgeons provide these items, while others require you to purchase them yourself. These bras are essential to your recovery and results, but they’re often overlooked when calculating breast augmentation expenses.

Time Off Work

Healing from breast augmentation typically requires at least one to two weeks away from work, sometimes longer if you have a physically demanding job. If you don’t have paid time off, lost wages may be something to figure into your overall cost.

Even after returning to work, activity restrictions (lasting up to eight weeks) may limit overtime, lifting, or travel. Factoring in potential income loss is an important step in planning for your surgery.

Long-Term Care and Maintenance of Your Breast Implants

Breast implants are durable, but they are not meant to be permanent devices. Most are designed to last around 10 to 15 years, though some may last longer. As implants age, the likelihood of rupture or leaks increases.

If you choose silicone implants, you will probably be advised to undergo periodic imaging to monitor for silent ruptures. These scans aren’t always covered by insurance and can become a recurring expense. Eventually, implant replacement or removal will require another surgery, which should also be considered as part of your long-term planning.

Revision Surgery

While breast augmentation has high satisfaction rates, breast revision surgery is sometimes necessary or desired. Reasons for revision may include implant complications, changes in your aesthetic preferences, or natural changes to your body due to aging, pregnancy, or weight fluctuations.

Additional Cosmetic Procedures

You may also choose to combine additional procedures, such as a tummy tuck or liposuction, with your breast augmentation to achieve more comprehensive body contouring. Adding procedures to your surgery will increase surgical time, thereby increasing the overall cost.
