Facelift

As we get older, the natural aging process, combined with gravity and sun exposure, can take a toll on our skin. To reverse these effects and restore a youthful appearance to the face, women and men frequently undergo facelift surgery.

Also known as a “rhytidectomy,” a facelift reduces the appearance of wrinkles and sagging skin on the midface that have become more noticeable over the years. Typically, this procedure is also performed in conjunction with a brow lift or eyelid surgery to attain an even more beneficial facial appearance.

Benefits of Facelift:

  • Improves skin elasticity
  • Restores muscle tone in the face and neck
  • Eliminates jowls
  • Diminishes creases around the nose and mouth

Good Candidates for Facelift

If wrinkles and sagging skin on your face are making you look permanently tired or older than you feel, you are probably a good candidate for facelift surgery. Ideally, you should not smoke or currently take any medications that may increase risks and complications, such as anti-inflammatory medications, including aspirin, ibuprofen (e.g., Advil or Motrin), or naproxen (e.g., Aleve), which can increase your risk for bleeding. Candidates should also be in good overall health and have realistic expectations about the outcome of their results.

Facelift Surgery Overview

Dr. Davison offers various types of facelift techniques to give you the results you desire.

Traditional Facelift

After you are anesthetized, Dr. Davison will make several small incisions in inconspicuous areas of your scalp and behind your ears. Excess skin will be removed as fat is redistributed, and the remaining skin will be redraped. Once a newer, more attractive contour is accomplished, the incisions will be closed with sutures.

Deep Plane Facelift

A deep plane facelift is best suited for patients who have skin with poor blood supply from previous damage, such as smoking or scars. This procedure is an advanced technique that aims to stretch the skin without providing a tightened appearance.

S-Lift Facelift

The S-lift facelift is designed for younger patients who want volume restored to their cheeks and have minimal sagging skin on the neck. This procedure is performed by permanently suspending and tightening the muscles in the lower face and neck.

SMAS Facelift

An SMAS facelift is performed like a traditional facelift, except that it addresses even deeper layers of tissue in the face. This allows patients with severe signs of facial aging to gain a noticeable improvement.

Questions Our Patients Ask About Facelift Surgery

What is a facelift?
Facelift (rhytidectomy) is a surgical procedure performed to restore a younger appearance to the face that lasts for many years.

Where is a facelift performed?
Dr. Davison performs facelift surgery on an outpatient basis in an accredited facility with the most up-to-date technology that exists today.

What type of anesthesia is used?
Facelift surgery is performed under intravenous sedation or general anesthesia, depending on the patient’s health and preferences.

How long will the surgery take?
Although the amount of time needed varies depending on the severity of aging in the face, the procedure can usually be completed in less than two hours.

Are incisions noticeable?
No. The incisions are inconspicuous to the naked eye because Dr. Davison makes them in the hairline and around the ears.

Is a facelift painful?
Although some discomfort may be apparent after a facelift is complete, prescribed medication can alleviate the symptoms associated with surgery.

What is recovery like?
After surgery, the face will be bandaged and wrapped for the first couple of days. Like any procedure, some downtime is expected after a facelift is complete, but most patients resume their normal routine about a week after surgery.

When are the stitches removed?
The stitches are usually removed about a week after surgery unless dissolvable sutures are used, in which case the stitches will not need to be taken out.

What about exercise and sports?
As standard practice, Dr. Davison requires that his patients avoid strenuous exercise and sports for at least one month to give the face an ample amount of time to heal.
