Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery) in Washington, DC

Excess, sagging tissue accumulating on and around the eyelids can create a chronically tired or sad expression. And when severe, excess eyelid sagging can even impair peripheral vision.

While excess skin is most often a result of aging, it can also be genetic, making upper and lower eyelid laxity a concern shared among patients of all ages. Fortunately, blepharoplasty, more commonly referred to as eyelid surgery or an eyelid lift, can address this laxity and return a bright and youthful facial appearance.

What Is Eyelid Surgery?

Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, lifts sagging eyelids to erase these signs of aging from around your eyes. Eyelid surgery can be performed on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both to restore a smoother, tighter, and more youthful eyelid contour.

With this procedure, incisions are made discreetly within and below natural creases through which excess fat pockets are removed or repositioned, muscles are tightened, and skin is trimmed.

Who Can Benefit From Eyelid Surgery?

If you’re considering eyelid surgery, you may fall into one or more of the following categories.

Excess Skin

Excess skin accumulation on the upper eyelids can cause them to be heavy. As your eyelids begin to droop, you may notice a change in your appearance or that your ability to see worsens. The unwanted skin from around your eyes is eliminated during eyelid surgery for a brighter facial appearance and improved peripheral vision.

Fatigued Appearance

Drooping eyelids and poorly distributed eye fat can lead to a chronically fatigued appearance, which can significantly age your face. Eyelid surgery will remove excess skin and redistribute or remove eyelid fat to minimize puffiness and restore a more rested appearance.

Lack of Eyelid Definition

Patients with an accumulation of eyelid tissue may find that they lack a defined eyelid crease or that excess tissue prevents them from having a smooth lid. This can be especially problematic for women because it makes applying makeup to the eyelids more difficult. During your eyelid surgery, the natural crease of the eyelid is enhanced and defined for a more appealing eye appearance.

What Happens After Blepharoplasty?

How Long Does It Take to Recover From Eyelid Surgery?

It takes between four and six weeks to fully recover from eyelid surgery. In the initial week, your eyes will be swollen, and you will experience bruising. You should rest with your head elevated for several days to prevent excess swelling from occurring. Most patients can return to work and normal activities within two weeks. Exercise should only be resumed with your surgeon’s permission.

Is Eyelid Surgery Painful?

There is some slight pain associated with eyelid surgery. Immediately following your surgery, it is normal to experience redness, bruising, swelling, and soreness. You will be prescribed an oral pain medication to control discomfort and should schedule downtime for at least a few days following your surgery.

Are There Scars After Blepharoplasty?

It is possible for eyelid surgery to result in some slight scarring that will fade over time. Incisions are placed in natural eye creases to decrease the visibility of scarring.
