All About Injectables, part 4: The Tortoise and the Hare

Radiesse and Sculptra are the last injectables that I’m covering in this series. While they may not have achieved the mainstream brand recognition as Botox and Juvederm, they are well known within the cosmetic industry for offering well established and proven volume restoring, wrinkle fighting results. They accomplish this through very different methods. Sometimes Sculptra and Radiesse are called the tortoise and the hare.

The Tortoise

In the Aesop’s fable The Tortoise and the Hare, the slow moving tortoise actually wins the race with a hare because of its steady effort. In a seemingly similar way, Sculptra offers visible results that are slower to appear, but achieve a big win because the results usually last a lot longer than any other fillers. It does this because it actually stimulates the skin to make it’s own collagen.

  • Medical: Sculptra is made of a poly-L-lactic acid, which is a manmade polymer that is biodegradable and biocompatible. In the medical arena, it has also been used for over a decade with FDA approval to restore the hollowed facial features caused by HIV. This material is also used in absorbable stitches and bone screws.
  • Cosmetic: The FDA approved Sculptra for cosmetic use in 2009. With 1 to 3 injections over the course of 6 to 12 weeks, Sculptra stimulates the skin’s collagen enough to effectively restore volume and smooth out wrinkles. If not under any event’s time constraints, some people prefer the gradual results because they come on less drastically and obviously. Generally, most onlookers notice the youthful results, but can’t pinpoint when or how they exactly occurred. It just looks like a mini facelift happened gradually over the course of 2 months. Also, unlike hyaluronic acid fillers, such as Juvederm or Restylane, Sculptra can last much longer, such as 2 years or more.

The Hare

Instead of hyaluronic acid, which is used by Juvederm and Restylane, Radiesse is composed of calcium hydroxylapatite microspheres suspended in a gel. Calcium hydroxylapatite is a kind of mineral that is normally found in human teeth and bones. In addition to instantly adding volume, the scaffolding created by the calcium hydroxylapatite in Radiesse promotes collagen production. This offers benefits to the skin’s foundation that lasts beyond when Radiesse dissolves.

  • Medical: In 2007, the same year it was approved for cosmetic use, the FDA approved Radiesse for treating facial wasting experienced by HIV patients. The medical community has also used Radiesse in therapeutic treatment for vocal cord deficiencies.
  • Cosmetic: Radiesse is an injectable filler that also restores volume in a thicker gel than Juvederm and Restylane. Its dense formula is great for moderate to severe facial wrinkles, nasolabial folds and volume loss. It also is a phenomenal way to take 10 years off your hands, which tattle on your age.

I hope that this blog series, All About Injectables, has informed and encouraged you about the safety and efficacy of the top injectables. Isn’t it interesting that there are such helpful medical uses for them, as well as cosmetic? I think that just adds to their credibility.

As you can tell, at DAVinci Plastic, you’re certainly not lacking for great options for your cosmetic needs. Fortunately, you don’t have to be the expert in which of these injectables would be the perfect fit for you. Our expert injectors can help you find the best fit for your beauty goals. Quick Summer Beauty Fixes for Your Face

Are you enjoying your summer sun and fun? I hope so, but keep in mind that too much of both of these can take their toll on the skin. That golden glow from the sun doesn’t come without a price. Some mid summer skin rejuvenation may be in order.

Dehydration

Dehydrated skin is different than dry skin. Dry skin is due to lack of sebum, but dehydrated skin is due to lack of moisture. It appears dull because the lack of moisture prevents cellular turnover. It also can be sensitive and flaky because the topmost layer of skin is not functioning correctly, so irritants can penetrate and more moisture is lost. In addition to drinking lots of water, use skincare that focuses of restoring moisture and not oil. A good example that we sell in our office is SkinMedica Rejuvenative Moisturizer. Also, avoid soapy cleansers that can strip the skin even more, and use cream cleansers instead. Restorative serums, such as SkinMedica’s Vitamin C and E complex, which prevents and repairs UV damage are helpful.

Fine Lines and Wrinkles

Dehydration along with aging, lifestyle and sun damage contributes to wrinkles. Fortunately, along with making healthy changes, there are effective non invasive cosmetic procedures to help smooth things out.

Here are some areas that can really be aged by the sun and dehydration, along with some “quick summer beauty fix” suggestions for your face:

  • Crow’s feet creep out from the outer corners of the eyes and extend outward towards the hairline. They are corrected with Botox or Dysport because limiting the muscle movement in the area will relax the wrinkles and prevent them from deepening due to activity.
  • Forehead Lines are caused by excessive brow movement and forehead furrowing. Accentuated vertical lines between eyebrows can give an angry or scowling appearance. You can quickly lighten your look with Botox or Dysport.
  • Tear Troughs or Hollows swoop below the eye from the bridge of the nose along the lower eyelid and sometimes extending downward toward the cheekbone. Their sunken appearance gives a tired appearance to the eyes, but Restylane and Juvederm are hyaluronic acid gels that safely restore volume to these areas.
  • Cheeks and Temples lose fullness and hollow out due to volume loss. Facial fat loss naturally occurs with age, but is sped up by dehydration and sun damage. As fat diminishes, these areas commonly sag and appear shallow. Restylane or Juvederm help plump these shallow areas to restore youthFULness.
  • Nasolabial Folds are formed due to volume loss and skin shifting downward. These lines are also called “marionette lines” and reach from the outer corner of the nostrils to the outer corners of the lips. Fillers Restylane and Juvederm help fix this issue.
  • Lips lose volume over time, looking thinner and flatter. They also can become framed by smile lines, called “parenthesis lines.” We can help you restore the youthful shape and fullness with the effective lip plumper Juvederm.

Along with avoiding sun damage, staying hydrated and using effective skincare, these injectables are great “quick summer beauty fixes” for your face. Schedule your summer beauty touch up today at www.davinciplastic.com.

Mother’s Day Rejuvenation Gift

Mother’s Day is a month away and forward thinking husbands and family members are already putting their heads together about how they can honor the mothers in their lives. And rightly so. One thing for sure is that mothers work harder than most anyone I know. Their work is not only physical, but mental and emotional. They don’t get to clock out at the end of the work day or take many “vacation days,” especially in the early years of motherhood. Their job is ever evolving and lasts a lifetime. We should definitely be showing love to our mothers year round, but especially on Mother’s Day.

One thing that mother’s deserve is some pampering. For some women that means a day at the spa, a decadent brunch out with girlfriends or family, or for others they want to have lasting youthful effects from a variety of cosmetic treatments and procedures. While getting Botox injections as a gift isn’t the same kind of pampering as a day at the spa, many women prefer the enjoyment of waking up day after day to a younger looking face and demeanor. More and more women are being vocal about their desire to receive treatments like this as their gifts. This is how we at DAVinci Plastic Surgery can help.

This week we will talk about some of the quick “in and out” treatments that we offer for those mothers who would like a youth enhancing boost to last for months. Next week we will cover some options for Mommy Makeovers that involve surgeries that address moms most requested areas of help.

  • Botox is known as a wrinkle eraser because it inhibits the muscle action that causes the wrinkles. This is especially useful for allowing forehead furrows to relax and smoothing out crows feet or wrinkles between the eyebrows.
  • Juvederm fills in creases and wrinkles with water attracting hyaluronic acid. The cells plulp up like a sponge sucking up water so that those “parenthesis” around the mouth or nasolabial folds are filled in. It is also wonderful for plumping up lost volume to areas of the face, especially the lips.
  • Radiesse immediately stimulates the body to produce collagen to replace volume for youth enhancing effects
  • Sculptra may not necessarily be considered a “quick fix” because the effects build over time, but the results last twice as long as hyaluronic fillers.

Each of these treatments successfully gives the appearance of turning back the clock of time to reveal more youthful facial features. This effect is rejuvenating and confidence boosting. In combination with each other, they can have the effect called a Filler Facelift. While this doesn’t compare to the full effects of a Facelift, it’s as close as you can get without going under the knife. We will custom tailor a combination treatment to address a variety of concerns, such as to:

  • Lift up sagging brows
  • Brighten up the eyes by adding volume to hollowed temples and sunken eye sockets or tear troughs
  • Erase forehead lines
  • Lusciously fill those lips
  • Lighten the lines around the mouth
  • Plump the cheeks restore youthfulness and gently lift the midface
  • Smooth and contour the chin

You can give these as a gift certificate to allow the mother in your life to choose what she’d like or designate the gift for a specific treatment that you know she’s mentioned that she wants. Visit www.davinciplastic.com today to pamper the mother in your life this Mother’s Day.

Caring for Your Skin, After Sun & Surgery

Taking care of your skin is crucial for effective healing after sun exposure and after surgery success. Summer months mean that skin damage from sun exposure is at its height. As summer comes to a close, it’s time to check your skin because detecting melanoma as early as possible makes it treatable. It is the deadliest cancer, but it doesn’t have to be if it it’s caught early. Regular self checking is a key part of immediate diagnosis is to do a regular self check.

AFTER SUN

What are you looking for? You’re at higher risk for melanoma if you’ve been sunburned frequently, have fair skin or a large amount of moles, live in a tropical or have a family history of melanoma. When you’re self checking, there’s a common acronym to help us remember what to look for. This is called the ABCDEs of warning signs for melanoma. This stands for:

  • Asymmetry: draw an imaginary line through the middle and it should look the same on both sides
  • Border irregularity: ragged or blurred, undefined edges
  • Color changes: a variety of colors within the same spot or mole
  • Diameter: greater than .25 inch (6 millimeters)
  • Evolving: changes over time

Where should you look? Important to look from head to toe, back and front. Using the angles from a hand mirror and a wall mirror to see the harder parts of the body from behind, literally start with the top of your scalp, especially if you haven’t worn hats to protect your head or have fine, thinning hair. Then move downward, examining the face, neck, shoulders, underarms, chest, torso, arms, hands, and nail beds. When checking the lower body, its easier to sit down, but don’t forget to check your buttocks, especially if you wear brazilian or thong bikinis. Look over your legs and feet, even the heels, soles of the feet and toenail beds.

AFTER SURGERY

What extra steps should I take? Whether your cosmetic procedure is invasive or non invasive, you should take some special care of your skin to promote healing and longevity of the effects of the procedure. Here are some simple tips to care for your skin after a cosmetic treatment:

  • Follow physicians directions. Each procedure has a unique protocol for optimal healing. This may include salves and the herbal supplement or cream version of Arnica Montana to reduce bruising.
  • Stay hydrated. Drinking plenty of water is good practice in general, but will help flush the area of toxins and empower healing. Avoiding alcohol and other dehydrating beverages so you don’t work against your natural healing processes.
  • Protect yourself from the sun. The skin is more vulnerable after a procedure. UV rays darken scars and this is what you want to prevent, so stay out of the sun.
  • Leave the recovery site alone. This means no picking or poking of the area. Disturbing the area could cause infection or unwanted scarring.
  • Use gentle skin care products. Make the extra effort during this time to pamper your skin while it’s healing. Use only mild, no fragrance skincare.

Help me to help you have beautiful, youthful skin by taking these precautions. From beginning to end, I look forward to helping you in the rejuvenation process. To schedule your consultation, visit www.davinciplastic.com.

Safe Sun Protection Part 2

The sun provides some wonderful health benefits, but as I’ve recently shared in previous blogs, there is good reason to protect yourself from its skin damaging UV rays. Here are the main ways to protect yourself when in the sun.

Sunscreen
Sunscreen can definitely be helpful in protecting your skin from the UV rays, but some sunscreen has toxic chemicals that should be avoided. For example, a recent study published in Environmental Science Technology has demonstrated that the common sunscreen ingredients, methoxycinnamate, oxybenzone and PABA are estrogenic chemicals linked to cancer.

Mineral sunscreens are preferable, as they are considered “broad spectrum” and protect against both UVB and UVA rays. They contain titanium or zinc, which do not breakdown in sunlight and are therefore more effective at also blocking UVA rays. These minerals are non allergenic and not usually absorbed into the bloodstream so they don’t affect the body’s hormones.

Clothing
You can’t go wrong by wearing a hat, sunglasses and protective clothing when in the sun. There is even special clothing that is enhanced with greater protection against UV radiation and laundry detergent that adds sunscreen to your clothes. The laundry detergent doesn’t add much, but a plain white Tshirt that normally only provides 8 SPF can be boosted up to 15 SPF with a sunscreen detergent. The main benefit to SPF laundry detergent is that it’ll help keep some SPF in the garment for longer, as it does tend to start to slowly wear off after 3 or 4 washings.

UPF vs SPF
Most commonly you’ll see the terms UPF (Ultra Violet Protection) on sun protective clothing, while the sunscreens say SPF (Sun Protection Factor). UPF measures a fabric’s protection against both UVA and UVB. Sunscreen’s SPF only rates its protection against UVB rays, which cause sunburn.
What does the number mean?

A UPF rating of 25 means that only 1/25th (or 4%) of the UV radiation can penetrate the fabric, giving a 96% protection against both UVA and UVB rays. A minimum UPF 15 clothing is good (94% protection), but 50+ (98%) is excellent, especially considering the effectiveness of sun protection will lessen over time, you’ll have longer lasting protection.

Regarding the measurement of sun protection, SPF is a bit more variable as the number is calculated based on increasing the amount of time you can spend in the sun before getting sunburned. For example, if the average person would burn after 20 minutes in the sun, a sunscreen with SPF 30 is supposed to protect against sunburn for about 10 hours. This effectiveness varies widely because some people’s skin burns more easily, the mid day hours have more intense UVB rays, and even most water repellant sunscreens wear off with sweat and water. Also, the SPF calculation does not account for the UVA rays.

Diet

Most people haven’t considered that foods and supplements that can actually help protect your skin, too. The American Cancer Society states that oxidative damage can increase your cancer risk, including skin cancer. Fortunately, there are lots of delicious, healthy foods that help reduce oxidation.

These are some suggestions for foods and the antioxidants they contain that help your skin:
Salmon and fish oil contain astaxanthin and omega 3 fatty acids.

  • Green and white tea contains catechins.
  • Red wine, blueberries and red grapes contain resveratrol.
  • Almonds, asparagus and pumpkin seeds contains Vitamin E
  • Carrots and red bell peppers contain Beta carotene.

I hope you take these sun protection tips and have a safe, fun summer!

Cosmetic Procedures for Men on the Rise in 2017

While women will remain the dominant customer base for cosmetic surgery this year, more men are seeking cosmetic enhancements than ever before. Continuing with the trend in recent years, 2017 will see a rise in cosmetic procedures for men.
Their perspective on it has changed and they see cosmetic surgery as helping to create a competitive advantage for a career and confidence boost. Also, men see plastic surgery and non invasive cosmetic treatments as part of their regular health care routine…like going to the gym or eating healthy.

Botox for the Bro’s = Brotox
While there is a growing set of procedures requested by men, the popularity of Botox for men has helped coin the term “Brotox.” Brotox can reshape a tired or gruff appearance into a more welcoming, friendly, rested look. Men also like this because there is no down time away from work so there is no productivity loss, only gain. Brotox is often done in our office during a lunch break or in between meetings. Also, Brotox allows for gradual minor changes that can be subtle. Men love hearing that they look more rested, happier or healthier without the person being able to put their finger on exactly what has been the cause of the change.

Move Over Mommy Makeovers, Here Comes Daddy Do Overs
The most recent years have seen a big increase in “Mommy Makeovers.”  These help women get their “before baby body’ back using a variety of procedures that help the areas that have suffered most during childbearing years. It’s a well deserved rejuvenation for women who have sacrificed physically and emotionally for the wellbeing of their family. While the effects are different for men, raising kids can take its toll on men’s bodies too. They want to feel and look younger so they have many more years to enjoy their children and grandchildren. This is why more daddys are choosing to get their own “Daddy Do Over” procedures as part of their health routine.

More Popular Procedures for Men…

Along with Brotox, Injectables, such as Juvederm, are most requested because they don’t require any recovery or down time. They minimize deep forehead creases, crow’s feet or nasolabial folds. They can also fill in pock marks to give the skin a smoother appearance.

Blepharoplasty reduces hooded eyelids, bulging under eyelids that can age and impede vision. This rejuvenates the upper and lower eyelids to rejuvenate a tired or gruff appearance.

Male Breast Reduction corrects the gynecomastia (male breasts) to sculpt their upper body and help restore their feeling of masculinity.

Men want that masculine “V” shaped torso again, which can help be restored with Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck) to remove fat and extra skin or Liposuction to remove fat, especially in areas like the gut and waist.

Through roughhousing and sports, guys are more likely to have their nose broken, which not only affect the appearance, but how they can breathe. Rhinoplasty can restore the appearance of the nose and breathing issues from nasal passage blockages.

Men still desire a strong chin as a sign of masculinity, which can be accomplished by a Chin Augmentation with Implants or Injectable Fillers. Also a double chin can be removed with Liposuction or Kybella.

Men, let’s talk about what I can do to help you with confidence, performance and satisfaction with your appearance and physique. Visit www.davinciplastic.com to set up a consultation today.

HAPPY NEW YEAR – HOW TO LOOK GREAT in those PHOTOS!

There will be lots of picture taking at lots of social events and they will most likely end up on “social media.”  So….we all want to put our “best face forward” for those poses.  I offer a brief, few tips for great photos:

  1. The Perfect Pout – this requires bright pearly white teeth and “plush lips.”  Juvederm is the most popular way to get that perfect pout with well shaped, lush lips.  Let’s talk soon!
  2. Eyes Youthful and Bright… You’ve heard it said that you should smile with your eyes.  And if you’ve got some crow’s feet and forehead wrinkles, you can take years off your eyes with a little BOTOX.
  3. Your forehead is part of your “T zone” and can often look shiny in pictures. Remember to always apply a light dusting of translucent powder to keep away the shine.
  4. Do Away with the Double Chin…
One of the most common picture blunders.
Use injectables like VOLUMA to restore volume and contour to the chin area.
  5. You can also trick the camera into slimming down your face …  slightly tilt your head down and angle your chin out just a little bit. This gives the perception of a sharper jaw line and higher cheekbones.

6.  The Three “P’s” of Pictures: Position, Posture and Pose…
Position yourself in the middle of a group photo. The people on the end always look bigger.
Good posture makes you look thinner and your stomach flatter. Simply stand up straight, lengthen your neck, roll your shoulders back, and lift up your chest. Pose in a natural, slimming position by resting your weight on one leg. Rest your hand on the hip with shoulder and elbow pointed back or allow your hands to fall naturally at your side while slightly lifting your elbow back and away from your body.

Looking forward to an outstanding 2017….Best Wishes to You and Yours!

Cosmetic Beauty Trends for 2017

Good Bye 2016… Hello Hottest Rejuvenating Trends in 2017

The New Year will be upon us in just a couple of days.  So, Happy New Year….2017.

I’m constantly being asked this time of year….what’s new…what will be the latest greatest in 2017?  So here is a brief look at the hottest trends…some are old but still in high demand…others are new and worth a good look at.

Breast implants and liposuction are on top of the list as “the most requested procedures.”  A few trendy treatments becomes popular in 2016 and will gather more momentum in 2017.

Brazilian Butt Lift has increased in demand as more women want curvaceous figures and need help with the buttocks!

Vectra Breast Imaging allows women to design a breast outcome that suits them best.  Vectra has quickly become in high demand among our clientele.

Vaser Lipo Suction uses tiny incisions to allow for fat removal after it has been broken up.  Liposuction has comes a long, long way!.

Our culture shapes the desires for “what is beautiful”… and technology makes these dreams a reality through innovation and affordability.  Here we go:

Non Surgical Fat Removal
Kybella was introduced in 2015 and gained a momentous following. As word has spread about the benefits of Kybella, 2017 is going to be an even bigger year for this non surgical – fat reducing procedure. Who wouldn’t want to melt away a double chin  without the downtime or discomfort of surgery? Less invasive procedures will continue trending which makes Kybella appealing.

Injectables for Millennials
No downtime and minimal recovery with injectables is also enticing scores of millennials into the world of cosmetic treatments. Millennials are a very busy population – with full social calendars … so making time for surgery and recovery is a real challenge. Also, Millennials grew up in the dawn and dominance of social media. It’s no wonder that media like Facebook and Instagram spur on more and more of an image conscious population. With their image sent out to hundreds of people on a daily basis, they have to make sure they look good.

Millennials are including injectables, like Botox and Juvederm, in their age prevention and health care regimen. So, while prevention is very good, know that it is just as important to only trust your face to an experienced, knowledgeable practitioner. Injectables, if not done correctly, can give an over “done” appearance… which can make you look older. The overdone look of over filled lips or paralyzed forehead (e.g. for someone in their 20s or 30s) can cause distortion or the perception of an aged face….defeating your goal of trying to look younger.

Rise in FemGen
The sexual revolution of plastic surgery includes an increased female interest in Labiaplasty surgeries to improve aesthetics, comfort and sexual pleasure.  It  can minimize stretched, imbalanced or interferingly large labia… increasing comfort and pleasure during sex, eliminates embarrassment/ discomfort from tight workout clothes or bathing suits.  These changes come from aging, childbearing years and genetics.

More Men
It’s definitely become obvious that most men aren’t embarrassed today about getting cosmetic procedures either. They see  plastic surgery and non invasive cosmetic treatments as part of their regular health care routine and to keep their competitive edge in the work place. Brotox means that a tired or gruff appearance can be shaped into a more pleasant, happy, rested look, and is often done in our office during a lunch break. No missed work, no major change, just a tweak to improve confidence and perception that can pay dividends in work performance, self confidence…and simply because more and more men today want to stay younger and healthier looking as long as possible!

These treatments can help you reach your goals for looking and feeling great about yourself during 2017. If you’d like to take advantage of any of these rejuvenation trends, schedule a consultation at www.davinciplastic.com.

Choose Your Breast Augmentation Surgeon Carefully

You can do all the research on the best implant, placement and incision for your breast augmentation goals, but if you don’t have a board certified surgeon with experience and artistry, then your results likely won’t be what you’d hoped for. This is why it is so important to choose your surgeon carefully. What sets a surgeon above the rest?

Credible Education and Board Certified
The surgeon must have the appropriate training and certification. Board Certification is a must. When you choose a surgeon like myself, who is triple board certified, you can rest assured you’re in the best hands possible. I am the only such surgeon in the tri-state area and one of only a handful in the United States with this level of triple board certification.

So What Does “Board Certified” Mean?

Actually not all certifications are equal. The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) has the highest standards, and is what I’m certified by. With an ABMS certification, you can be assured that the doctor has voluntarily submitted to this extra process to demonstrate a commitment to excellence in their field:
1. graduated from an accredited medical school
2. completed at least 5 years of additional training as a resident surgeon in a program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Medical Education or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada
3. passed comprehensive written and oral exams

Caring and Concise Consultation
Since Breast Augmentation is the most frequently performed cosmetic surgery, I get a lot of questions on the many aspects of this highly personalized surgery. Even though patient knowledge and understanding of breast implants can give us a starting point, you’re ultimately trusting the first hand experience and practical knowledge of your surgeon to help you achieve your personal goals.

Part of that experience is the ability to listen and communicate about goals and expectations. I encourage my patients to bring pictures of what they want and don’t want. Also, you are welcome to see lots of examples of my work.  In addition to discussing your health history and the results you’d like, it’s important to get to know you in terms of your lifestyle. Lifestyle choices and activities, such as drinking, smoking, diet, vitamins/herbal supplements, working out, horseback riding, etc. are important factors.

Credibility Among Peers and Clients
Besides checking patient reviews, it’s important to consider what kind of reputation the doctor has in their field amongst peers. I have always been on the cutting edge of my field, as a professor, examiner, and writer of more than 100 clinical papers in my field. Also, I have given more than 95 national and international lectures. Some of my greatest acknowledgements have been:

… Receiving the nomination by my peers in the Washingtonian for both “Best Doctor” in plastic surgery and breast reconstruction

… Being rated currently as a Castle Connolly best surgeon and an “America’s Top Surgeon”
… Have the honor of my patients choosing me as “The Best Plastic Surgeon” of DC and “Number One Doctor” for many      years in a row

As you can see, you can trust that your Breast Augmentation is in the best hands with a surgeon like myself. Visit www.davinciplastic.com to set a consultation today.

Your Surgeons Credentials Do Matter!

While on the topic of FaceLift surgeries, let me emphasize the importance of having a very experienced surgeon to handle this, delicate, complicated procedure. Thus, I decided to share my credentials… and those that you should look for in other surgeons. I will do this through 3 main criteria upon which surgeons are judged: training, qualifications and results.

TRAINING… QUALITY EDUCATION AND INSTITUTIONS
I’ve always wanted to provide the highest quality care to my patients, so I adhere to the highest standards beginning with my studies. My distinctions in undergraduate years studying Dentistry, include the Dell Medal for Performance and The British Student of the Year award from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland.  As I went on to earn my medical degree from the University of Maryland, I also was selected from among my peers to receive the Babcock Award for surgical excellence. Next in my studies was to specialize in head and neck/otolaryngology at the world renown Mayo Clinic. For my final years of hands on experience, I was selected to do my plastic surgery fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh, which has one of the most comprehensive plastic surgery programs, and then completed a reconstructive cancer fellowship at the premier cancer hospital in the country, MD Anderson in Texas.

BOARD CERTIFICATION
Another factor that elevates my standing as a plastic surgeon is that I am triple board certified in a rare yet extremely applicable combination: plastic surgery, otolaryngology/head and neck surgery, and facial plastic surgery (which I earned the Jack Webster prize for the highest score).  I am the only such surgeon in the tri-state area and one of only a handful in the United States with this level of triple board certification.

It is important to note that the board certifications I’ve earned are accredited by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS), which has the highest standards. With ABMS certifications you can be assured that the doctor has:
1. graduated from an accredited medical school

2. completed at least 5 years of additional training as a resident surgeon in a program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Medical Education or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada

3. passed comprehensive written and oral exams

RESULTS…PEER AND PATIENT REVIEW
I believe in staying on the cutting edge of my field. As a result have given well over 95 national and international lectures, and written more than 100 clinical papers. Some of my greatest acknowledgements have been from my peers and patients, as I’ve been:
…nominated in the Washingtonian for both “Best Doctor” in plastic surgery AND breast reconstruction (by my peers)
…currently rated Castle Connolly best surgeon and an “America’s Top Surgeon”
…selected as “The Best Plastic Surgeon” of DC and “Number One Doctor” for many years in a row (by patients)

My biggest reward and compliment is a satisfied patient. To find out more of my credentials and to schedule a consultation, please visit www.davinciplastic.com.

THE MOST Popular Cosmetic Surgery Procedure

There are some things that are just “tried and true”… like mom’s apple pie, fall leaves changing color in DC and the Breast Augmentation. This surgery has been perfected for decades and is the most performed cosmetic surgery for many reasons. These are some of them:

More harmony of proportion, balance and symmetry
Some women feel their small chest size stands out as an awkward feature because it isn’t in proportion to the rest of their body. It is also common for women to have two different breast sizes and want them to be balanced and equal. The ideal Breast Augmentation enhances the size, shape & projection of your breasts so they are harmonious with your entire body. They should look natural, smooth and proportionate.

Improved self-esteem & confidence
While a healthy person wouldn’t have their happiness and self esteem completely dependent on a Breast Augmentation, it can give an amazing confidence boost and satisfaction with body image. The feeling of inadequacy can be crippling to the confidence and full expression of your personality; if a Breast Augmentation can help you feel more “you” then more power to you.

Overall satisfaction with body image and fashion choices
While certain clothes compliment different body types, you shouldn’t have to feel disappointed that most tops don’t fit right because you cant fill them out. If you’d like to dress your best, a Breast Augmentation can help you feel satisfied with your body image and how you look in those fashionable clothes and bathing suits.
Getting the breasts you’ve lost over time or from having children and/or breastfeeding
Time and gravity certainly has its affects on the breasts. Breast Augmentation can restore you chest to its more youthful years. Weight loss and childbearing also can leave the breasts deflated and sagging compared to their prior glory years. There’s no shame in wanting to restore your breasts to what they once were. Losing weigh is a great accomplishment and childbearing is a beautiful, worthwhile sacrifice; you shouldn’t feel less satisfied with your breasts because of these wonderful life changes.

Feeling “whole again” and normal after mastectomy
While the wounds from a mastectomy are more than skin deep, a Breast Augmentation can greatly help to restore the feeling of normalcy and wholeness that losing one or both breasts can rob from you. So much of a woman’s feeling of femininity comes from her beautiful curves, and a Breast Augmentation can help in the process of restoring what was lost and creating a confident new life. It is possible to do more than just “survive” cancer, but to “thrive” after cancer.

These are just a few of the most common reasons why a Breast Augmentation is the most popular cosmetic surgery. In the coming weeks we will look at this procedure in more detail.
